Pictures of our rodents and the cages they are living in at present.
Mice
We are not breeding so many mice now as the space is just not available. Our mice are kept in converted RUB's, Really Useful Boxes, as these are more economic to buy and give more floor space per mouse for your money than the cages available in the shops.
Rats.
Our rats are kept in aviary type cages, I tend to use all and everything as toys and hammocks, we also use Freddy2's and critter1's and 2's. We keep our rats in 'sexed' groups and they get along very well with very few arguments. I find that my bucks are a lot more acceptable of newcomers than the does but then again I don't have many problems with introducing new does to the girls either. It does take a little longer than with the boys but I've had no fights resulting in injury to date.
We use converted 120ltr RUB's for does due to give birth. They are then moved on into Freddy's or Critters when babies start to emerge from the nests. I find the does feel more secure in these 'boxes' and tend their young to a greater degree than in a cage where they can climb around.
Our Syrian the baby with no tail!!!!!
Syrian, named as he has no tail, lost his tail when his mother was frightened by demolition work being carried out behind our house. She panicked and chewed off his tail and damaged his leg. He and his siblings were the 'lucky' ones as she also killed 7 of her kittens. They were only 5-6 days old at the time so there was nothing that could be done for the babies. One other sibling, a little agouti doe, also lost part of her tail and has a damaged foot. Her name is 'Mezo' apparently meaning 'half' in Portugese. The other three surviving kittens are fine and dandy.
Both Syrian and Mezo will be staying here as pets for their entire lives.
Mezo
Mezo is the sister to Syrian, above, who sadly lost part of her tail and has a damaged foot due to her mother having a fright whilst they were very young.
